MURDOCH (nee Greene), Dame Elisabeth | | Dame Elisabeth MURDOCH (nee Greene) AC DBE
Elisabeth Greene attended Clyde School, Woodend as a boarder from 1922-1926. She was a lively and popular student who excelled in sport and music (particularly piano). The native bushland and eucalyptus forest of Mt Macedon instilled in the young Elisabeth a love of the natural environment. She formed strong friendships that would last a lifetime. Her social conscience was aroused by volunteer community service at school, an early inspiration in a lifelong commitment to philanthropy and helping others. Dame Elisabeth first became a committee member of the Clyde Old Girls` Association (COGA) in 1929. For 83 years she was consistently involved in all COGA and Clyde activities - the Red Cross group, Isabel Henderson Kindergarten committee,Clyde Parents` Association, Clyde School Council, Clyde School history book in 2006, and the Clyde centenary in 2010. Clyde School was amalgamated with Geelong Grammar School (GGS) in 1976 and became known as Clyde House at GGS Corio campus. Dame Elisabeth has been honoured as a Fellow of the Old Geelong Grammarians, and in 2010 a new boarding house for girls at GGS was named Elisabeth Murdoch House. On behalf of all Clyde Old Girls, the President and Committee of COGA extend sincere condolences to the Murdoch family.
Farewell to our beloved friend Dame Elisabeth, a truly great Australian.
