DODD, Grahame Powis

Grahame Powis DODD
Died peacefully on June 26, 2006, aged 82.
(Ex-RAAF/RAF 15 Sqdn. in Mildenhall, U.K.)
(G.P. Retired, from Walcha, N.S.W., Miami and Nerang, Qld.)

Loved husband of Shirley.
Father and father-in-law to Philip and Petah, Ian and Alison, Christopher and Sandra. "Papa" to Simon and Kylie, Josh and Shae, Kate, Emma and Megan. "Grae" to Lorna. Uncle Grahame to Margaret, Dianne and Linda.
"Ray" or "Doddy" to his fellow RAF Lancaster crew members: John Whittingham, Syd Merrifield, John Graham, Aubrey McNish, Jim Hasler, Joe Warnock.

A special someone we cannot replace. A quiet, deep-thinker with awesome intelligence, caring manner, wicked sense of humour, master of the quick retort.

An old-fashioned country G.P. who`d think nothing of taking a 3 a.m. call, 40 miles out, on a freezing cold Walcha night, (despite knowing and not caring, he may not be paid till the next wool cheque came in!) Awarded life membership
of the Walcha District Hospital in 1976 for 21 years meritorius service.
A laconic, laid-back 19 year old Aussie who, over 36 WWII missions, never lost his calm nor air of understatement. Diary entry, Monday, January
1st 1945: "...hit by 3 bursts of light flak which knocked out starboard motors and cut off most of our fuel, also carried away... aerial. After a crash landing (at Juvencourt) in which `D for Dog` was a complete write off... had a wizard meal of roast turkey, then got off to bed."

A hero then, heroic to us still.
As his old friend Syd Merrifield said, "(We can) visualise him dealing with a medical crisis calmly, self-deprecatingly, just as he did sitting in that bomber flying in a very hostile sky in 1944/45."

He will be sadly missed by family, crew, colleagues,
friends and patients alike.
Grahame expressed the desire for no "pomp and ceremony", so his will be a private cremation. In due time, his ashes will be interred in Allambe Memorial Park, on the Nerang-Broadbeach Road, Nerang, Qld.

Christopher, Ian, Philip and
Shirley Dodd, 30th June, 2006.
