Athol James (Jim) DAY was the third husband of my mother - Elaine Betty (nee RUSSELL) - of Tamworth. She was his second wife (he had formerly been divorced, I understand - and had a number of children - five? - to that marriage). The marriage to my mother lasted a decade or so until difficulties led to divorce - after which - surprisingly perhaps - their friendship resumed - and lasted until his death in Newcastle in early July, 2009. Jim spent many years out in the opal fields of north-western NSW - and was creative in his construction of ornamental trees of copper-wired opal pieces. I am hazy on the dates for marriage and divorce because for most of the period 1990-2009 I was living and teaching in Japan. Requiescat in Pace!
